Additionally, the 5.5 km long Mappo - Morettina auto tunnel was opened in 1996, which directly connects Tenero with the center of Locarno and significantly reduces traffic. The uniqueness of the region around Lake Maggiore lies in its landscape beauty and mild Mediterranean climate. Locarno is probably the most climatically favored city in Switzerland. With almost 2,300 hours of sunshine per year at an average temperature of 15.5 C, flora and fauna can develop favorably. The mild Mediterranean climate favors an early spring, a long and hot summer with little precipitation, and an autumn that lasts until November. The cultural highlight is the film festival, which takes place annually in August.
