Balerna is a Swiss municipality of 3385 inhabitants in the canton of Ticino, in the district of Mendrisio.

Balerna is situated on a hill in a sunny position; the flattest part is the Pian Faloppia area. The watercourses that flow through the territory are the Breggia, the Faloppia and the Raggio.

The municipality is served by Balerna railway station on the Gotthard railway.
